Knox Residence
Knox College Residence is a historic student residential property located within the University of Toronto’s downtown campus. Originally established as part of Knox College, an institution founded by the Presbyterian Church in Canada in 1844 and federated with the University of Toronto in 1890, the residence has long played a role in supporting academic life and community on campus.
Constructed between 1912 and 1915, the building reflects the collegiate Gothic architectural tradition that defines much of the historic St. George campus. Designed by Chapman & McGiffin, who were selected through an architectural competition to develop the new campus for Knox College, the residence continues to serve as an important housing asset within the University’s broader residential portfolio.
In March 2022, the University of Toronto completed the strategic acquisition of the residence property alongside the adjacent Macdonald-Mowat House — home to the School of Graduate Studies. The acquisition reinforced the University’s long-term commitment to preserving historic campus assets while expanding institutional control over key properties in the downtown core.
Today, Knox College Residence provides student housing accommodations in a highly connected academic environment at the centre of campus life.

Property Details
Constructed from Credit Valley grey stone with Indiana limestone detailing, Knox College Residence is widely regarded as one of North America’s most distinguished examples of Collegiate Gothic architecture. Architects Chapman & McGiffin drew inspiration from the historic colleges of Oxford and Cambridge, creating a building that has become a defining feature of the University of Toronto’s campus. More than a century after its completion, the residence continues to offer a distinctive sense of place and architectural character within Toronto’s urban core. In recognition of its historical and cultural significance, the property was designated a heritage site by the Toronto Historical Board in 1983.
